Article submitted by: Helen Bell, CSA President 1-22-08 Marty Boyajian and Rocky Briggs have both been notified they will be inducted into the National Hall of Fame this year. 1-21-08 The two California players have been confirmed as on the USA team. This year the membership voted to pay the California ISA players registration fee which will be $75 per each of the two players. Also the membership voted to give each player $500 to help them with their expenses if they are selected and play on the United States Team. It is estimated it will cost each player personally about $2500 to go and play in Australia. If they do not go and play on the USA team they must return the $500 given to them by the CSA. The process in California is that you must in the tryouts beat all comers in the state. Next you must be recommended by the CSA President and the National Representative for the Western Region. The recommendations are forwarded to the USA team captains (mens and womens teams) and the captains selects their 12 players . It is a great honor to be selected and get to play. There are about 30,000 players in the U.S. Think of the odds of being selected and playing. California has several who were selected in the past and played on the United States team. In California they are Boyd Jordan, Rosie El Rite, Dick El Rite, Jim Trausch, Barbara Irigoyen, Gigi and Rocky Briggs, Helen Bell, Jean and Fred Day Ellie Mazzola, Emmett an Donalee Allen, Roland Schneider, Cathie Baldwin, Marie Patterson, Don Goodrich, Ed Romani, Dick Rodgers, and Frances Darling . After the Australia matches the next meeting will be in Germany (one of the new member nations). Other nations getting ready to join are England, Ireland and Denmark. Zimbabwe has been a member and status is unclear.
NOMINATING LETTERS FOR THE NATIONAL HALL OF FAME MARTY, ROCKY, JOAN COOK
CALIFORNIA SHUFFLEBOARD ASSOCIATION
Organized November 10, 1959 To: Those who select the National Hall of Fame Members
Please accept this letter of nomination for Marty Boyajian for consideration for induction into the National Shuffleboard Hall of Fame. Marty is a native Californian born in Fresno in 1926. Marry worked over 20 years in aerospace and then went into the motion picture, film and food industry. On retirement he and his wife Dorothy moved to Hemet and began to play shuffleboard in 1988. He is president of the Hemet Municipal Club and has been for the last 14 years. He has been president of the Hemet district and for the last 10 years has fulfilled the responsibilities of public relations. Marty writes a shuffleboard column for the local newspaper and has appeared on local and national television promoting shuffleboard. He has been secretary of the California Shuffleboard Association for over 12 years and was inducted into the CSA Hall of Fame in 1999. He was captain and took his team (10 years) to the Western Team Championships in Arizona and in 2003 they won first place. He has played and won often in shuffleboard tournaments. This nomination is not about his playing ability. He is a person who for the last 19 years has dedicated his life and fortune to helping others and shuffleboard. For 10 years Marty has worked with disabled students. They come to his courts and he has a team he has built that teaches them shuffleboard, holds tournaments, picnics, and gives awards. He is know throughout the shuffleboard association and the local community for this work and has been honored by the state with the "Make a Difference" award. He was recently awarded a proclamation from the City of Hemet for his work in enhancing the game of shuffleboard in the community. Marty is always working to build good relationships within shuffleboard. He worked several years to get started the "Team Championship Classic" which is now played in Hemet California and Arizona. The 2007 Classic that was played in Hemet involved 9 (12 person) teams from Arizona and 7 from California. Approximately 300 players and workers were involved for five days. This tournament continues and he hopes to expand it. This year Texas was invited. This involves 4 or 5 locations running all at once. Marty will be in overall charge this year He instigated two groups of young adults playing shuffleboard. One is the city of Hemet finance dept and their families and the other is a group of people from the Stadium Pizza (they call themselves the "Iron Men"). This activity continues. He has was responsible for getting shuffleboard as a sport in the Senior Olympics (called Oldlympics in Hemet) and is played at his home courts. This activity continues. He along with Ray Patterson started the shuffleboard "kickoff' picnic. The event starts each season. Attendance this year will be in excess of 400 as he invited the Hemet horseshoe club to join the event. All food ect. is free and shuffleboard is also played. Fourteen years ago Marty started a tournament called the "Bonspiel". It is very unique in that there is no kitchen, no practice shots and everyone plays 2 games per day for 3 days and you never get eliminated. This is one of the most popular games in the area with a waiting list of people wanting to play. His current projects are a new game called "more heads are better than one" which he is helping spread throughout California and working with 32 foreign exchange students which he hopes to turn into a yearly activity. I think you can see why he is the heart of shuffleboard in the California area and has worked to help others and shuffleboard for 19 years. Larry Bell President California Shuffleboard Association

To all voting members of the National Shuffleboard Association
I would like to put the name of Rocky Briggs for your consideration, for the Hall of Fame the year 2008. This being a National Organization, I believe that one of the two members voted into the Hall of Fame each year, should come from each section of the Country, The East and the West, In fairness to all our members. Rocky started his Shuffleboard career in 1992, the second year he was voted Club President, the following year he became California 3`d Vice President, and went up the ladder to become the State President, at the same time he was District I & 2 President. As Club President he won the League Championship 4 years in succession, moving to Sun City in 1999 he was elected District 7 President and took over Team Captain of the Red Team, and won 3 League titles and second in the 4TH year. Rocky was instrumental in bringing the 2000 International Shuffleboard Tournament to California with teams from Japan, Brazil, Canada, Australia, and The USA. lSt time USA won both Men & Ladies Championship. Rocky has hosted an Any Doubles National Tournament in Hemet West, Hemet, California. He has participated in ISA Tournaments in Australia, Brazil and Canada.
Rocky was appointed Western States Regional Vice President by (Buck Buchanan) then National President and has held the Job ever since.
Some of Rocky's Playing Record is as follows

Subject: "National Hall of Fame" candidate.
I'd like to nominated seven time "National Champion" Joan Cook as a candidate for election to the "National Hall of Fame". Joan stands 18' on the all time National point standings and is in the rare position of holding titles in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles. She is a dedicated, 749 point, Florida Shuffleboard Association player in her 15' year as a "Pro". She's won three Florida State "Masters" and five Central District "Masters" and is a member of both Halls of Fame. All of this point out that she meets the requirement of being a National Shuffleboard player who has played at least 10 years. The following paragraph shows how she has met the requirement of making a significant contribution to the game of shuffleboard.
Joan has been instrumental in bringing four of the last six Florida Shuffleboard Association "Masters" to Zephyrhills, as well as the State sponsored Singles and the Hall of Fame banquet; a strong organizer who is not afraid to dig in and go to work, each event has been an overwhelming success. Joan has served as a District Officer and is currently a Florida Shuffleboard Association Vice President; only the 2°d women to be so honored. But probably even more significant is what she has done to encourage players who have quit playing to come back and accomplish a goal or the drawing in of new players who may not have the confidence to compete, she opens up tournaments just to play with such players to get them on the road to success in the game of shuffleboard. She teaches lessons at her club to help get new players started. She spends her own money sponsoring Tournaments; serves on committees and works in the kitchen during local events all in the sprit of advancing Shuffleboard. Certainly these are the traits of a "Hall of Famer".
I believe she is a deserving candidate, thank you for your consideration,
Gus Bondi Florida Central District National Representative
